What the Frost Couldn't Keep

Have you ever lost something beautiful, yet found yourself carrying it with you long afterward?

This painting was inspired by the same Wyoming spring that gave rise to One Day of Spring.

The apple trees at our ranch burst into bloom, covering their branches with soft pink blossoms. For a few brief days, we thought another apple season was on its way.

Then Wyoming reminded us who is in charge.

Snow arrived. Temperatures dropped below freezing. By morning, the blossoms were gone, and all hope for apples this year were gone. Yet some beauty remains long after the moment  has passed.

Painted in watercolor and ink, What the Frost Couldn't Keep is less about the blossoms themselves and more about the memory they left behind. The loose lines and soft washes suggest a fleeting moment that cannot be held, only remembered.
It is a reminder that even brief moments of beauty leave something lasting behind.
