Still Blooming | Original Crepe Myrtle Watercolor
Still Blooming
Have you ever needed a reminder that you can still bloom, even when life hasn't given you everything you need?
After moving into my new home in Brenham, Texas, I discovered five crepe myrtle trees growing on the property. They had endured a long, hot Texas summer with very little rain, yet there they were—still blooming, their delicate pink and red blossoms brightening the landscape.
They have responded to my watering and thoughtful pruning with fuller blossoms and richer colors. It is deeply satisfying to see these graceful trees flourish with a little attention and care.
After more than two months away from my painting table, Still Blooming became my first watercolor in my new Texas studio. I was drawn to the exuberance of their blossoms, the soft, ruffled petals, and the graceful branches that support them.
Using transparent watercolor, expressive ink, and loose washes of pink and green, I wanted to capture not just their appearance, but their joyful persistence.
Crepe myrtles have long been associated with endurance, renewal, and the ability to thrive through difficult conditions. I love that meaning, especially now. Sometimes life asks us to adapt to unfamiliar surroundings, find our strength again, and discover beauty in unexpected places.
Still Blooming offers you a gentle reminder of resilience and renewal, while its lively blossoms and fresh colors bring warmth and a touch of nature's joy to a favorite room.
Even after the longest, driest summer, there's still a reason to bloom.
