Mamay's Hydrangeas
Have you ever seen something in a garden that stayed with you for a lifetime?
I grew up in rural Georgia and spent many weekends "in town" with my grandmother, "Mamay" Her house was once part of a much larger property, a grand old Southern home surrounded by extensive gardens. By the time I knew it, most of the land was gone and the property occupied only a modest city lot. Yet pieces of those gardens remained, and to me they were magical.
What fascinated me most were Mamay's hydrangeas. Some blossoms were blue, others pink, and many carried several colors on the same bush. I couldn't understand how one plant could produce so many different shades. Mamay explained that the roots reached into different soils, and the soil changed the color of the blooms.
That conversation stayed with me for the rest of my life. Painted in watercolor and ink, Mamay's Hydrangeas is inspired by those childhood weekends among the flowers and by the grandmother who first taught me to notice them.
It is a celebration of memory, family, and the gardens that continue to bloom in our hearts long after they are gone.
